Terraforming Mars cheat sheet

Rules reference · base game

Global parameters

Oxygen0 % → 14 %
Temperature−30 °C → +8 °C (2 °C per step)
Oceans0 → 9 tiles
  • Each step you raise: +1 TR. TR starts at 20 (1 VP per step, and your basic income).
  • At its goal a parameter can't rise (no TR); you may still play the card.
  • Bonus steps (the player who raised it takes them): 8 % oxygen → temperature +1 step (+1 TR); heat-production bonuses on the temperature track; 0 °C → you place an ocean tile (+1 TR and its placement bonus).

A generation

  1. Player order: first-player marker moves clockwise; generation marker +1.
  2. Research: draw 4, buy 0–4 at 3 M€ each, discard the rest face down. No hand limit.
  3. Action: 1 or 2 actions per turn, clockwise, until everyone has passed. Passing puts you out for the generation.
  4. Production (all at once): energy → heat; M€ = TR + M€ production; then all other production; remove markers from used action cards.

Generation 1 skips phases 1 and 2.

Actions (1 or 2 per turn)

  1. Play a card: check requirements → pay the cost first → effects in any order → place it (blue active, green automated, red event face down).
  2. Standard project
  3. Claim a milestone
  4. Fund an award
  5. Blue card action (red arrow): once per generation; pay what's left of the arrow, get what it points to, mark it with a player marker. Corporations work the same way.
  6. 8 plants → greenery (oxygen +1, TR +1)
  7. 8 heat → temperature +1 step (TR +1)

Any mix, even the same action twice.

Playing a card

  • Buy into hand for 3 M€; play it for its printed cost. Requirements only count when you play it; some are a maximum.
  • You must be able to do everything it says (e.g. lowering your own production). Red-framed production cuts aren't optional: if no opponent can lose it, cut your own or don't play it.
  • You may still play it if it raises a parameter already at its goal, adds resources you can't collect, or has red-bordered "remove resources" you can't or don't want to do.
  • Red-framed removals: all, part or none, all from one player. Place its tile if you can; with no legal area, still play it.
  • Event tags only count while the event is being played.

Power plant11 M€+1 energy production
Asteroid14 M€temperature +1 step
Aquifer18 M€ocean tile
Greenery23 M€greenery tile (oxygen +1)
City25 M€city tile, +1 M€ production

Always available; each can be used several times per generation. Steel and titanium can't pay for them.

Tiles

  • Take the bonus printed on the area, plus 2 M€ per adjacent ocean (even when placing an ocean).
  • Ocean: only on the blue reserved areas (12 areas, 9 tiles); no other tile goes there. +1 TR. Owned by nobody.
  • Greenery: next to one of your tiles if possible, otherwise anywhere. Oxygen +1 and TR +1 (no TR if oxygen can't rise). 1 VP, plus 1 VP to each adjacent city.
  • City: never next to another city. 1 VP per adjacent greenery, whoever owns it.
  • Special: as the card says. 3 areas are reserved for specific cities (Noctis City always goes on its reserved area, even next to another city). Mark owned tiles with your marker.

Resources

Cubesbronze 1, silver 5, gold 10
Steelpays for building-tag cards, 2 M€ each
Titaniumpays for space-tag cards, 3 M€ each
8 plants→ greenery tile
8 heat→ temperature +1 step
Leftover energy→ heat at the start of production
  • Mix with M€; no refund for overpaying.
  • M€ income = TR + M€ production. Only M€ production can be negative, never below −5. Production can pass 10.
  • Card resources (animals, microbes…) sit as cubes on their card.

Milestones

  • Claim for 8 M€ when you qualify
  • 5 VP
  • max 3 of 5 claimed
  • one owner each
TerraformerTR of at least 35
Mayorown at least 3 city tiles
Gardenerown at least 3 greenery tiles
Builder8 building tags in play
Planner16 cards in hand

Awards

  • Fund for 8 / 14 / 20 M€ (1st, 2nd, 3rd funded)
  • no requirement
  • max 3 funded, each only once
Landlordowns the most tiles in play
Bankerhighest M€ production
Scientistmost science tags in play
Thermalistmost heat cubes
Minermost steel + titanium cubes
  • Final scoring: 1st 5 VP, 2nd 2 VP (no 2nd place in a 2-player game). Who funded it doesn't matter.
  • Ties are friendly: tied players share the place. If 1st is tied, no 2nd place is given.

Game end & scoring

  • When all three parameters reach their goals, finish that generation (actions until everyone passes, then production).
  • Then, in player order, one last chance to turn plants into greeneries.
  1. TR
  2. Awards
  3. Milestones (5 VP each)
  4. Board: 1 VP per greenery; each city 1 VP per adjacent greenery
  5. Cards: resource-collecting cards first, then all others (events too)

Tie: most M€ wins.
